Tooth Restoration with Porcelain Crowns

As we age, our teeth start to show signs of wear and tear. Cracks, stains, decay, and erosion can be unpleasant – and pose a risk to your oral health. In the past, these defects were covered with unsightly silver or gold crowns that could be seen whenever a person smiled, laughed, or yawned. But with advancements in dental restoration and cosmetic dentistry, most patients now opt for porcelain crowns. This modern dental treatment is strong and nearly undetectable, resulting in a flawless, long-lasting restoration.

Benefits of Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns are an attractive, personalized dental solution. The biggest appeal to patients is how much porcelain crowns look and feel like real teeth. The material can be sculpted to match the texture, shape, and color of your other teeth so that it blends in seamlessly. Because each crown is custom ordered and fit, most patients don’t notice the crown themselves.

Another major benefit of porcelain crowns is durability. They are known to last up to 15 years. With good oral hygiene habits, the crown will continue to protect the healthy part of the tooth from further damage or decay. The glassy porcelain material is also stain resistant, so you can still enjoy your favorite foods and drinks and not worry about damaging the crown.

Do I Need a Porcelain Crown?

When a large filling is needed but there isn’t enough tooth left to support the filling, such as after root canal therapy, your dentist may recommend a crown. A dental crown is a custom-made “cap” that covers the entire tooth to restore its size and shape. The crown can strengthen a weak tooth and prevent further damage or decay. Made of a similar material as porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns protect teeth but offer the extra advantage of natural-looking coverage. Crowns are also used to attach bridges or top a dental implant.

What Is Involved in the Procedure?

Receiving a porcelain crown usually requires two office visits. At your first appointment, we will take X-rays to assess your tooth, root, and bone. Once it’s confirmed that you need a crown, we will prepare your tooth by removing enough structure to make room for the restoration. We will take an impression of your teeth and send it off to a dental laboratory, where your crown will be made. Meanwhile, you’ll be fitted with a temporary crown to wear until your permanent crown is ready.

It usually takes two or three weeks for the permanent crown to arrive at our office. At that time, you’ll come back in for your second appointment. We will ensure the fit and color of your permanent crown are a good match to your surrounding teeth, and then we will cement the crown onto your tooth.
